- In folk medicine, Marshmallow is used as a treatment for inflammations of the mouth, throat, digestive system, urinary tract, and skin, and as a remedy for ulcers, infected wounds, burns, constipation, and diarrhea. Its effectiveness for these problems has not, however, been verified. Marshmallow stimulates the immune system and the production of white blood cells. It also soothes inflammation, slows production of mucus, and reduces sugar levels in the body. The Marshmallow plant originated in central Asia, spreading westward to Europe and eastward to China. It has been known since at least the time of the Romans, who cooked it as a vegetable delicacy.
